“Studying with Weena has fundamentally altered the limits of my physical abilities. I’ve learned to do things that I hadn’t imagined I can do. Weena is a brilliant teacher – she finds ways of making the complicated and impossible simple and within reach. Because her experience is so diverse, her classes are always fresh and surprising.”

Class Descriptions CORE
CORE combines the most essential elements of Pilates, yoga and strength training
into a fun, intelligent and effective fitness class. Based on understanding
what core strength means, how to find and maintain it, core development is
a crucial step in avoiding injury and alleviating chronic problems, such
as back pain. CORE works heavily on proper alignment, on finding your most
efficient relationship to gravity. Class begins with a series of warm-ups
incorporating breath as a means of connecting your mind to everything below
it and generating heat in the muscles. Then we move into more Pilates-based
core exercises and yoga postures. Class progresses to various exercises that
move across the floor, addressing stability and strength. CORE then uses
rotating stations of muscle specific exercises, plyometrics (explosive muscle
training), and an obstacle course requiring full body movements to improve
cardio-vascular health and athleticism. Classes end with flexibility training
and relaxation techniques. Outside CORE
This class takes everything in the inside class to a new level. Held outside
in Parks and jungle gyms, students begin with core warm ups and flexibility.
Class is developed based on location. Students can be seen doing sprints,
jumping fences, climbing up walls, bench pushups, agility drills and running
up, down and through jungle gyms. Outside class requires some prior training
and an adventuresome spirit. Classes meet rain or shine. Please bring as
little as possible. Weena will hold personal items, wallets, keys and water
bottles. Stroller CORE
This class takes Moms, their babies and their strollers into the park for a
workout. This class offers moms an option to exercise and be with their new
babies in fresh air all at the same time. Classes meet in the park. Moms
will be able to do a lighter version of the Outside CORE with their babies,
occasionally leaving the strollers with Weena for exercises like pushups,
sprints and tricep dips. Babies need to be under crawling age to participate.
In case of bad weather, class will be cancelled. This class offers the support
of a community of moms who all want to incorporate intelligent exercise into
their new lives.
Yoga
Weena’s yoga class is based on the ISHTA model and uses influences of
Iyengar and Vinyasa also. This yoga class is different from most in that it
focuses primarily on achieving healthy, balanced alignment through core awareness,
as well as mobility and relaxation. This class is designed to supplement more
vigorous types of training with deepening stretches to increase flexibility
and rotation. Understanding where tension lives in our bodies and how to relieve
those areas greatly reduces chance for muscle tears and strains. Increasing
movement ability in joints and freeing up the spine allows for more mobility
in the whole body which means greater freedom for the breath and, therefore,
more options for ways to move and live. Meditation, an important element of
Weena’s yoga class, is part of the practice of connecting to the life
inside your body. |
